Gruul down!
Last night I we went to Gruul's Lair to take out HKM and his friends and to give it a few good shots at Gruul. We really didn't think we'd have much chance of getting him all the way, but we were determined to use it as a practice event.
Well, HKM went down on the 4th try. The first couple of pulls were ... shady at best and made for quick wipes. After the 2nd wipe we sure as hell didn't think Gruul would go down the same night. 3rd try though, the pull went a lot better, as in "how it's supposed to", but some bad luck made for a late wipe. 4th time's a charm and we got them down without a hitch. Things were looking up. Just got them before trash respawn too.
Pulling the trash to Gruul was a pain, people just didn't get the meaning of "HUG BEHIND!!!!". We even ended up putting a star on one of us that knew what was happening, saying "Follow the star!". Anyhow, we wiped twice on the trash... Things were looking down again.
But we finally got there. Gazing upon Gruul the Dragonkiller. Frightening guy that.
That's when the surprises came along. First try we got him to 16% at 15 growths. 2nd time 15% at 14 or 15 growths. 3rd time 11% at 13! We actually started to believe in this. Before the 4th we had to clear the trash again sadly, and it was actually the same problem with the hugging once again. Can you even start to fathom that? Sheesh... Oh well, only one wipe this time.
4th try we were so close to having him down, only got him to 14-15% or so, but it was looking SO GOOD right before he decided to play hardball with us. We went from 3 tanks left to 0 in mere seconds. Incidentally that was also the try when I was a wee bit giddy at the start and reached 2nd on aggro right away and was oneshotted (I was catting it at Gruul, but tanked old "Blindeye the Seer" on HKM). That'll teach me.
5th time... well, what's there to say? Everything went perfect! Gruul was down before his 15th growth. 3 tanks still standing. I died about 3 seconds before Gruul himself, but hey, I can live with that!
And the most awesome thing? I got my T4 pants!!! RAWR!! After loosing the roll on the T4 shoulders at HKM that was soooo awesome!

The other strategy for trash, is forget the hugging strat and all group up at range (put a star on the ranged). Then have one of your DPS warriors in the group ready to taunt em when they charge. And folks just need to stop DPS until they are back on the MT, it's funny because the warlock is always the one that gets hit (dot,dot,dot)
The other thing that Gruul trash hates is a shamans searing totems. I've noticed many times, even if I am the only shammy, the mob will charge the searing totem, thus giving the tank a couple of extra seconds to pick it up.
Hmm... the searing totem is a good idea. I'll relay that next wednesday. The other strat... well, to be able to follow that you'd have to be able to follow *a* strat, so... you get my drift.
It begs to be mentioned of course, that most of us have been through this whole ordeal on other characters, allthough perhaps in other roles, so the event wasn't new to most of us. A few of us who had been spread out over different guilds over the years and especially since TBC decided to resurrect our old guild, Interlunium (which incidentally has been around, just sleeping, since day 1 of vanilla wow, thus celebrating a 3-yr anniversary now ;-)), and start a whole crew of new chars. Making sure we got the essentials in the process, a healer, a mage, a tank or two etc.
But I haven't been there in quite a while, so it was FUN! FUN FUN FUN!!!
