We've all been there. I do not believe there is one single gamer that peruses these pages who has not dabbled in World of Warcraft. And why would you not? It is a magical mixture of all the required ingredients, stirred, battered, deep fried and finished off with just enough fail to make people angry. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a good game and I love it as much for it's features as it's flaws. The cartoonish style that so many complain about is the perfect way to avoid Uncanny Valley whilst still giving yourself a vast, creative freedom to play with the world. It also helps make it accessible, as the association with real people and real violence is broken across all age groups. You're as likely to find a 60 year old granny playing it while her pet cat warms her lap as you are to find a pimply nerd rager that calls himself TheEaterofSoulz playing with the Night Elves.
It's just a very, very good game. Rewards. Carrots. Gameplay. Fluff. It has everything.
So what pisses me off? Because, as you know by now, I almost don't post unless I'm pissed off.
This, and once again, read in my faux George Carlin voice:
People who claim World of Warcraft is played by teenagers
Seriously? Get the fuck off that stereotype. The data might be a few years old now, but Nick Yee has done some good research into the topic. I don't know why the hell people would go ahead and make a claim like this! Well. I do. And I'll tell you in a bit. First, read the comment from somebody who should have his head and his arse swapped around.
WoW has a very different player base: pre-teens and young teens who usually play on mom's budget work laptop, don't care neither about in game market integrity nor about how stupid a quest could be as long as they are running swinging shiny swords at each other
Consider this.
In any event. Rant over. I just wish people wouldn't say that.

I wholeheartedly agree...
I've had to endure this mindwipe of a mindset before, usually by brats unable to type properly even if they'd been offered sex for doing so. "Why do you play a kids game" I've been asked. "How do you DARE to think that only kids like to have fun" I answer.
This is not just related to WOW, though.
I'm 23 and nerdrage, enjoy pewpewing with my biggest sword(mace, actually, but yea), and spend too much time on forums. That being said, when I tell people I play WoW they still look at me like I am insane. Not so much that I am playing a kids game, but I believe that people have a terrible knowledge of WoW. Why? Because it really is that awesome of a game. Too many stories generated about kids failing out of school to play. Of adults not spending time with their others and broken marriages. Of socially acceptable people turning into vampires, only emerging from their cubby hole to piss and smoke.
I agree with both of you, and I like Gorm's comment. I got into a long talk with a web designer where I work. After awhile we got into a discussion of hobbies and I told her I played games. She rolled her eyes and said something like "So when you get home tonight, what are you going to do?" Seeing as how it was a Tuesday or Wednesday, I told her I was going for a bike ride, cook dinner, eat it, take a bath then play WoW. She rolled her eyes. I asked what she was going to do tonight. She replied, get home, cook dinner, watch some tv then go to sleep.
I looked at her for a minute and was about to get into the discussion of why she thought her night was better than mine, but gave it up and left.
Whatever.
I went Fury on Pikki so that she could wield two great big axes... hehe ... sorta of a chicks with big guns thing I guess :P
I have to whisper or mutter whenever I get a call from my friend at work and we discuss gaming of any kind. I feel embarassed tbh because of the stereotype. Tell a lie; sometimes I grunt non-committal replies back at him over the phone.
I have trouble getting respect at work at the best of times lol. Imagine what it'd be like if they all thought I got home, dressed up in my chainmail and leather, sword and started speaking using ye olde Englishe, because I bet thats what they would think happens.
...excuse me a sec'..."OI WENCH - wheres my codpiece gone?"
Sometimes folks seem to forget..
Yes, he happens to like big honking swords..
Now is it really prudent to piss off someone with access to said big honking swords and the knowledge how to use them effectively in disemboweling you with a single stroke?
Kinda goes back to this video, I guess.

Honestly, I personally know 2 people under the age of 40 that play the game, and they are in their mid 20's. The oldest I know of is my GF's mom at age 66.
I like the cartoonish aspects of the game. I really don't like games to look too real. For me, the more realistic a game looks, the more easily the flaws are picked up, distracting me from the game. (Yes, I'm the ope that can't watch a lot of movies because of subtle flaws and inconsistencies that most viewers never notice).
I think when it comes to gaming, like many other hobbies, people either get it or they don't.
