Hackzored

Well, we got an in-game mail purportedly from Blizzard. Liz thought it was spam... and checked out the website anyway... which never loaded.

When she tried to log on this morning, it kept asking her for her 'authenticator' key - which we don't have.

So, on I log and there is Jingster in Sholazar. A few choice words and I ring blizzard support. They now have a 1800 number for Ozzie customers, yay, so 45m on the phone queue (ran an instance with phone on loudspeaker :P) and blizz reset her password and removed the authenticator from the account - nearly forgot to do that...

On we log. All toons stripped, badges used.

Jingster still had the gear she was wearing, everything else had been vendored. But with an epic mount and herbing, they'd set her up as a bot to go herbing in sholazar basin. So I mailed the fruits of that labor to my herbalist :))))

Oh - and they either deleted or transferred the level 12 druid that had several heirloom items... strange...

One bright point. She got the core hound pet for adding an authenticator to her account!

oh dude, -dude-! :( Very sorry to hear about this. it sucks, gettin' hacked, obviously. you'll wanna make sure you submit a ticket to restore whatever can be restored to her account asap. (which might, actually, include restoring the herbs you shifted to your toon - so keep an eye out on that just in case).

as a sidenote: the authenticator is a nifty thing to have, actually. you might wanna pick one up for both yourself and the little lady as well. (assuming you've not yet)

Yup I reckon you are on the mark there - probably could have avoided all this if we'd had one. Late Xmas present i reckon. Yup, ticket raised :(

What is an authenticator?

It's basically a reduced SecureID token if you know what those are. Blizzard's Store: Authenticator.

If you have one you also get an ingame non-combat pet, the Core Hound Pup

Man, that sucks! I am sure they can do a full restore, especially since they can check your ingame mail and clearly see it was a hack. Hope it all turns out well!

Welcome to the club. It really happens to everyone it seems. I used to consider myself "invincible" since I was always careful with my browsing and I use a few different AV/antispyware programs, but it's not always enough.

The shitty thing about restoring though is that they mail you the stuff. Depending on how much items you had (and how much of a mess your bank was) it can be a pain to sort out everything again. Just imagine all your equipment, bags and bank sent you over a dozen in-game mails =/ Multiply this by the number of toons that were messed up and you're in for a few hours of fun.
