Apparently, (and I am taking this from what other people mention) one of the largest guilds in EVE got disbanded last night. Their CEO went on an extended vacation in real life, and during this time the bills for the guikd couldn't get paid, shutting a lot of them down. When the CEO got back, he sold freaking everything, self destructed a good number of ships for their insurance money (which he then took), kicked out all the players, transferred the entire wealth of the guild to his character, then quit the game.
You can read the "official" story or read through a bit of comments here to make since of that first link. Apparently if he were to sell the currency on the real world market, it would be valued at close to $60,000.
I have to admit, EVE sounds awesome.

Goonswarm were allegedly created to disrupt the game in any way possible, and this follows with their forumites in other games too. They didnt play the game to "play it", but to exploit & ruin it as much as possible for others. However in essence this is what pvp kind of boils down to to a greater or lesser degree i.e if you raid an opponents base in any game theres a certain amount to which the loser is going to be pissed off I guess.
I do still have a leaked document though which the Goon's produced on how to exploit the game. CCP got hold of it too and said anyone found using its contents would be banned.
I've personally never come across them in EVE or any of their kindred in other mmo's and I would think that unless youre located near their previously owned area of space the effects of their disbanding will not be felt. The ex-CEO sounds like a big baby to me.
Im still playing and liking the game. My only problem is how to fit it in between BFBC2 and CODMW2. However because you can train skills while not logged into the game I am happy to set a long skill training and just log in a few days later to change it over and its the only sub I pay for atm.
Still feel sorry for the BOB guys though. Sure what the Goons did a year ago was legit in the game mechanics, but it was still dirty.
Then again, you may see from the CCP forums that its even okay to scam in the forums. You see a lot of posts for in-game lotteries and asking for in-game investments and the like which are likely to be scams and its all okay to do without any recriminations by CCP.
You should give it a try Stigg. You may like it, but its a LOT different to other mmo's.
In... one of the articles I either linked or was linked to from those, there was a short paragraph about how they would run "suicide ganking". It made it sound like they were suicide detonating their ships in the bases of other people. Is... that.... right? Or were they just going somewhere knowing they were gonna die but to just take out some players?
I'd love to give Eve a try, perhaps a trial account would be wise.
The ship wont fly if you arent in it, so they do it Kamikaze style by flying the ship right upto the hull of another ship or a station and dropping a smartbomb. Obviously ships are easier to kill than stations, and some ships quite a bit harder than others depending on size and their tank.
Its not true suicide though as anyone who does it either uses a disposable character or they make a clone in which they can store their implants / augments in so when they die they dont lose these devices, which can be veeeery expensive. All that then happens is they rez in their clone which is usually in a safe station somewhere, rinse and repeat.
Recently we had "Hulkageddon" which was a load of dick heads suicide ganking - or mostly just ganking - the Hulk class ships and industrial haulers in the game. Hulks are what we train to use to mine asteroids for ore. Hulkageddon ran for nearly 2 weeks I think and was a pita for me as I played it safe and didnt mine at all. Mostly it was safe though I think, so long as you didnt go AFK while you were mining in a belt (theres not a lot to do while mining except read, eat and sleep). If you were alert then the Hulk is a tough industrial ship you could escape or tank the attackers, depending on their builds and numbers.
Also the attackers need to be fast if they attack in high sec space as Concord (Da Fuz) can appear in 10 - 15 seconds and whup their arses. I suspect Goon's areas completely involved lo sec space though. No Concord there. Like the Wild West...or Boston.
Try it. You might like it very much. It is a damn good game.
