UI Help!!!

Nefarion's picture

Well, I redid my UI a couple weeks ago and I'm fairly happy with it, but to be honest I'm beginning to get a little bored with it. I want to change it radically but I can't come up with any good ideas. I like the more abstract and minimalistic layouts that are becoming common now, but I also like to have all my UI utilities bunched together in a core panel (sort of like MazzleUI, but that UI specifically is horrid). Maybe you guys can help me come up with some ideas..

As you probably all know I'm a sucker for aesthetics. Sloppiness is something I hate and it needs to be absolutely gorgeous. I've learned how to do much more with GIMP so I can handle pretty much all the graphics work I'll ever need, but I'm simply in a creative slump for graphics and layout.

So, give me some ideas for general layout, some ideas for the graphics (don't worry about what I can or can't handle, I'm a fast learner), and some overall tips for UI setup.

Thanks.

(I've attached a very slightly outdated version of my current UI.)

(Edit: As a better example of the organized UI based around a core panel, I like how SpartanUI is setup and how it makes such wonderful use of its beautiful art to make everything appear so seamless, but I don't like the overall UI itself and I'd prefer different artwork with a similar seamless effect.)

Edit: I think I've got some ideas actually. I'm going to borrow the nice dark black stone-ish style of Spartan but modify it slightly. And the setup will be a bit more minimalistic.

I need to ask this. Will you make your current UI available for download at all, please?

The attached screenshot? Not likely. Sorry..

As of right now it's just too sloppy, code wise and visually. It's not nearly perfected and wouldn't likely work on most other computer (due to different sizings ans settings). It would just take too much to perfect it to release it publicly.

If you want the base image I used, as well as the 3 gradient images I made from it, I'll gladly send them to you.

Here's a suggestion you can mull over. It's a very rough sketch, but might give you a little inspiration.

Nice ideas Gormash but I've already settled on a basic idea. I found some ***STUNNING*** textures inside a random UI pack (unused by the pack) and I decided to modify and recolor them for my own uses.

Somewhat of a teaser image: http://knightly-slumber.com/worldofwarcraft/files/UI.jpg . The entire UI will be based around that, though it will probably be modified slightly in the process of applying the textures with eePanels. As you can see it will be the more abstract and minimalistic style. And I can't wait to make it.

Edit: Oh god, making HUD bars to match that's going to be a nightmare!

I liked the starfield more. This one feels a bit "random" whereas that one had a sense of cohesion about it.

I've changed it a bit and still trying to find better statusbars. While I liked the starfield theme it got boring after a while, and I'm liking this new one better now.

To be perfectly honest, I don't like it at all. In fact, I hate it.
It seems kind of "messy", and that purplish-pink scheme oozes too much Paris Hilton vibes for my tastes.

Oh well, as long as you like it. But you DID ask for our opinions.

Nefarion's picture

Well actually I like it but it's getting boring quick. I set out today to make a UI based around a core panel and never achieved it, and I find myself wanting it yet again.

I'm going to download SpartanUI and mess with it graphics in GIMP. Maybe I can modify them to my liking and place them myself with eePanels. Then maybe I can look at how they got the sexy glowing bars and steal that as well.

And Paris Hilton skankness aside, I love the purplish-pink.

Blah. For now I'm just going to go back to the starfield one. But I'm bored of it. Maybe I'll come up with some ideas soon.

Back to the gradients! I found some amazingly helpful posts on the site OMGPhatLoots that seems to be linked by very many good UI developers and I've decided to redo the starfield or "Nite" UI rather than scrap it completely. Hopefully with some of the amazing tips over there I can come up with something quite stunning.

Edit: You guys think I should scrap the clouds and try to go with less shocking, flat color, maybe black or darker paler purples?
