I applied for a Graphic Artist job at the base in Okinawa. Awesomely, I got selected for an interview!
They want to see my portfolio, which I have (missing some more recent stuff because I can't take screenshots/print off at the moment). But I was wondering if any of you had any tips on what I should include, shouldn't, presentation, etc. :D

Can't give spesifics since I don't really know what you'll DO at this job, but a safe bet is to include a little of everything you've done, both digital and off the computer, to show your versatility. That'll let them know you can handle everything they throw your way.
If you're going to include sketches, make sure you keep them separated from finished products, perhaps by adding sections in your portfolio.
Oh, and congrats on the interview. :D
Thanks, that sounds like a great idea. I need to work on incorporating those...
Unfortunately, they were looking to interview on the 22nd and 25th. I don't arrive on Okinawa until late on the 26th. I asked if I could set up another time, but they replied that its an immediate fill position and I could maybe get an interview if none of the other candidates work out.
So close yet so far. ):
Make your portfolio into a PDF or a website and send it to them. Might be your work will make them think twice, allowing you to get an interview on the 27th. Stranger things have happened. ;)
EDIT: Fixed a typo. Thus this post got pushed down below Chunders. ^_^
Gormash is wise beyond his ears. Its a good suggestion if you can manage it.
I totally would if I could, but my computer and scanner were packed up on Monday. I like that, though, it's a great idea to have a physical and online portfolio. I will do it once I can.
Thanks for the good ideas. :D
Oh, I did have a website. If I can get a job I'll probably set it up again. Is Go Daddy still one of the best hosting companies?
tan and I (and I think justin, though I'm not sure) use hostgator. That's what this site is bought from and I think we can all attest to the uptime and availability. Last time I checked (a few years ago) hostgator had cheaper rates than godaddy.
And I can't speak for Stigg, but I pay for unlimited bandwidth and hosting. It is more than we can ever use, so if you need to - I can host the site for you - you'll just have to use your own domain name. (Or even use a knightly-slumber/nefi name if you like)
Up to you, but the offer is there.
<3 tan.
I don't actually have mine anymore... I found it more useful to use blogger, since that was pretty much all I was doing and its easier to use that to find and share with other people that use it.
Aw thank you, I might take you up on that depending on how the job search goes.
I remember yours, Aaron. You actually hosted my old site. Thanks again for that! :D
As far as I know, yes.
I use GoDaddy for my own site. I don't have it as host though. I got one setup years ago through a site I was moderator at.
As to the PDF, Gormash is completely right. It's the right way to go. Just one thing - don't make a bland "here's mah stuff, lookey here". You're doing graphics design, design your portfolio. Make it stand out, make it look you. They should get an idea of what you're about without even looking at what you put in the portfolio.
Split up the portfolio in an order that makes sense. Think about what piece you are most pleased with, make that the very first bit people will see. Regardless of whether it's actually the most recent piece or not. Base the rest of what you want to showcase around that. Don't feel the need to include 15 bazillion things, unless they very specifically showcase different techniques or further exemplify your view.
Yeah I am thinking I could design/lay it out in InDesign, then print to PDF. That way I can get fanceh and demonstrate my knowledge of the program. :D
Good points on placement and what to include. I am always kind of confused on whether or not to put an older piece in the front, but your reasoning makes sense.
"ears"...did no one get it?.....sigh!
Lol! You know what, I didn't even see it was missing a "y" until you said this. X:
