And it all started because a pilot in a Titan hit Jump instead of Bridge. Utterly epic and even though the server was running 10% TIDI it was running with ~2700 on grid in that system. And considering the number of carriers and super carriers; the number of drones and missiles on grid must have been ... ZOMG!
Well, considering there were 2700 people, that averages out to about $7 a head... though losing three of those ships that look like giant mushrooms is where they lost a majority of their money. And even then, it's not really fair to call it 'dollars' as I am sure a majority of the players didn't use cash to buy their ships, and instead used in game money.
EVE was a lot of fun. No rules, endless ganking and stealing. I quit because I didn't enjoy the idea that you can pay real life money to get so much in game currency.... It would have taken me a few months to get the in game money that some people got with $15.

To give you an idea
Yea, absolutely epic. I wonder if there has ever been such a large fight in an MMO before.
Also, dibs on salvage rights.
As I'm not a player of Eve, the scale doesn't register to me. The pictures in the album look like a borg swarm or something. They don't make sense.
$20,000 just makes me think - why the fuck do people play this game.

An dev entry about the battle and an amazing detailed write-up of EVE, the cost of the ships, background, etc. of the battle.
